  • Love it, but…

Love the app. It works perfectly on my ipad. However in my iPhone it’ll freeze up at certain times, usually at the same place in a lesson. The only way out is to drop out of the app and starting over (only to happen once again). Hoping an update is releasing soon
  • Too many bugs

This can be a great app to learn vocabulary in context!! However the French lessons are too buggy and the mismatch between the clips and translations really make is impossible to want to subscribe at this time… it’s gotta be bug free if I’m spending money on it.
  • Billing

I tried this app during my tee trial period. The day before the trial ended “Immersly Inc.” billed my account (cancelling the subscription during the free trial period was an option I chose by the way). Thankfully I was able to avert the transaction. Fast forward WEEKS later the company charged my card again! Feels like a scam. Just requested a refund from Apple but it’s alarming that the company after weeks passing can still try and bill your card. I do not trust the developers behind this app. S-C-A-M.
  • My favorite vocab app!

I don’t usually write reviews for apps, but I have never had such an easy time building a language vocabulary! I have been learning French and Korean casually for over a decade now and no tool has exceeded my expectations like Umi has. The app is super fun to use and continually updates with new functions! I highly recommend this app if you are looking to improve your pronunciation and become conversational in one of the languages it features.
  • Surprisingly Effective!

First and foremost I’d like to mention I have a decent amount of experience with language learning apps as I’ve tried my hand with most of them. This in mind, Umi has exceeded my expectations with its design and functionality. I’ve attempted to learn Korean using other apps, books, videos etc.. but this app makes it super easy to remember words and phrases visually and auditory. I look forward to any future improvements or additions to the app and my confidence with Korean is growing everyday. Thank you!
  • Could be so good!

I’m learning French, which I believe may be one of the newer languages added to the app, so this may not be as big of a problem with other languages. The clips don’t match the subtitles half the time. Usually it isn’t a problem with the specific vocabulary word being taught, but when the other words and phrases don’t match the actual dialogue, it’s missing a very big opportunity for learning. I have the app set to a level that is too easy for me, so it has become more of an exercise in spotting the differences between the clip dialogue and the subtitles, rather than learning the vocabulary. I think it would be very beneficial to pay native speakers to make corrections. If the “report error” flag allowed for a description of the error, I would also happily provide detail. Additionally, the listening exercise where you need to choose which word you’ve heard from a list of 4 words is too easy because the words are totally dissimilar. There’s no motivation to truly listen, as it’s always obvious which word it is. If the words were someone similar, it would require listening to and understanding the differences. All said, I love the idea of this app, especially listening to real, rapid French in context.
  • Needs to be free like Duo

Cool app and has potential but needs to be 100% accessible for free with an optional paid model like duo or it feels pointless to use in comparison. I’ll happily change my rating if done so!
  • Great idea

I used this app to supplement my French lessons in other programs, and while I love the idea of it, the availability of free lessons is pretty slim. On top of that the app did not work about half the time, failing to load the lessons, the clips, and/or the audio, and sometimes the only way to fix this was to close the app completely which would lose your place in the lesson. Additionally many of the clips were captured in the wrong place, or didn’t accurately represent the dialogue being spoken, missing entire words or sentences, or incorrectly translating them. I think that learning from this app could actually do more harm to your knowledge than good if it isn’t cleaned up a bit more, because teaching certain words incorrectly, or failing to demonstrate proper context could build your understanding of the language incorrectly. I would have been more impressed if most of the functions weren’t broken or inaccurate. That being said if the problems can be fixed and the formula improved then I think this is a great concept. I loved certain features like allowing you to play back a recording of your voice to hear your own pronunciation before submitting your answer. The price for a year isn’t terrible but unfortunately right now I can’t afford yet ANOTHER subscription, and I am very (VERY) tired of everything requiring a subscription in general. I wish more apps would offer an up-front, one-time fee like the Procreate app and many mobile games do.
  • One dimensional - missing grammar and words

I know some French already. Some of the transcriptions and translations are completely missing words that are in the clips and it’s confusing. It also doesn’t push your grammar forward beyond vocabulary. It’s great to use the clips to help you understand the vocabulary in context. However I t’s just a memorization app at the end of the day and doesn’t grow knowledge beyond that.
  • Good for what it is

Good for what it is. If traditional methods are difficult then this may speed things along. Be warned! Definitions are…awkward sometimes and spelling and grammar…idiosyncrasies are spread throughout. You will be able to converse and people will understand you but if you are looking for an academic / scholarly approach to learning then this may be more of a supplement. - am Korean.
